What We Believe

About the Bible

The Bible is God’s Word to us. It was written by human authors, under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is the supreme source of truth for Christian beliefs and living. Because it is inspired by God, it is the truth without any mixture of error.

About God

God is the Creator and Ruler of the universe. He has eternally existed in three persons: The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. These three are coequal and are one God.

About Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He is coequal with the Father. Jesus came down from heaven, was born of the virgin Mary, lived a sinless human life and offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice for sin by dying on a cross. He arose from the dead after three days to demonstrate His power over sin and death. He ascended to Heaven’s glory and will return again someday to earth to reign as King of Kings, and Lord of Lords.

About the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is coequal with the Father and the Son of God. He is present in the world to make men aware of their need for Christ. He also lives in every Christian from the moment of salvation. He provides the Christian with power for living, understanding of spiritual truth, and guidance in doing what is right. He gives every believer a spiritual gift when they are saved. As Christians, we seek to live under His control daily.

About Man

People were created in the image of God and in innocence under the laws of their Maker; but, by voluntary transgression, Adam fell from his sinless and happy estate; all men sinned in him, in consequence of which, all men are totally depraved, are partakers of Adam’s fallen nature and are sinners by nature and by conduct, and, therefore, are under just condemnation without defense or excuse.

About Salvation

In order to be saved a person must be born again and that new birth is a new creation in Christ Jesus; it is instantaneous and not a process; in the new birth the one dead in trespasses and in sin is made a partaker of the divine nature and receives eternal life, the free gift of God; the new creation is brought about by our sovereign God in a manner above our comprehension, solely by the power of the Holy Spirit in connection with divine truth, so as to secure our voluntary obedience to the Gospel; its proper evidence appears in the fruits of repentance, faith and newness of life. We believe that faith alone in Jesus Christ is the only condition for salvation.

About Eternity

People were created to exist forever. We will either exist eternally separated from God by sin, or eternally with God through forgiveness and salvation. To be eternally separated from God is Hell. To be eternally in union with Him is eternal life. Heaven and Hell are real places of eternal existence.

Community Outreach

Spreading the Gospel of Christ in our mandate. It is our desire for all ministries of Oak Park Church to have an element of outreach in sharing the Gospel in our community.

Our History

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

                                                                       Proverbs 3:5-6

The church held its first service on Sunday, April 10, 1960. This was accomplished with the help of the pastor and the members of Immanuel Baptist Church of Fort Wayne who saw a need for a church on the west side of the city. The name of Westridge Baptist Church was chosen on April 30, 1960. The church officially organized on September 7, 1960 and called its first pastor. After meeting in a home for several months the church started meeting in the Turner Athletic Hall. The church purchased property on Illinois Road (now Target) in November 1960. Eventually a building was constructed and dedicated on Sunday, January 26, 1964. The church out grew that building and so a new church was built and dedicated on Sunday, March 13, 1977. An education wing was added some years later. In October 2007 the church relocated seven miles west on Illinois Road to its current location. At that time the church changed its name from Westridge Baptist Church to Oak Park Church. The church has been served by seven pastors.

Note from the Pastor

Now that you’ve “kicked the tires” of our website we invite you to come “test drive” a Sunday morning.  That you would attend a worship service would be our privilege.  We aren’t going to make over the top promises about our church.  At Oak Park we don’t have it all together and don’t want to pretend that we do.  Life (i.e. this mess we’re in) is hard and sometimes brutal.  The message of the Bible is about a big God helping people with their big problems.  We firmly believe that the help we need is found in the gospel of the crucified, buried, risen Jesus and so we make a big deal about Him.  We hope you visit us soon.
